How can I take care of the drains in my home?

Proper drain maintenance is crucial to avoiding costly repairs and water damage from backed up drains. One of the most common drain problems is a clogged or blocked drain. A blocked drain can cause damage to your home and is often a smelly problem. You should first try using a plunger on your clogged drain or toilet; most drains can be cleared with a plunger. You also need to be aware, and careful of what goes down the drain. Small amounts of debris are okay, but things like cleansing wipes, sanitary products and large food items will clog your drains. You should never pour grease down the drain; it should be stored in a container and then thrown in the trash.

Another way to prevent your drains from clogging is making sure your drains stay as clean as possible. Hot water is your best defense for a clogged drain, pour a few cups of boiling water down your drains weekly to prevent a clog. Salt water is your best defense again smelly drains; regularly sending very salty water down your drains will help eliminate bad odors as well as cut down on grease build up. Make sure to be diligent about using drain grates, and hair catchers to avoid unwanted items going down your drains.

Be careful with chemical drain cleaners since they can damage plastic pipes and garbage disposals, they are also not meant for use in toilets. If you do not want to go the chemical route, try a mixture of baking soda, then vinegar, then hot boiling water to remove clogs. If, after proper maintenance of your drains, and a few attempts at unclogging your drains, you are still experiencing problems, you need to contact your local plumber for assistance as you may be dealing with a much larger problem.
