National Diabetes Awareness Month: What You Should Know
29 million people in the United States have been diagnosed with diabetes, making it one of the most prevalent diseases in our country, and National Diabetes Awareness Month is dedicated to raising awareness about the disease, what causes it, how it can be avoided, and managed.
How much do you know about diabetes? Keep reading to learn more about this disease, which affects 9.3% of the American population, and what you can do to stay healthy if you’ve been diagnosed:
There are two types of diabetes: Type 1, which results from a patient’s inability to produce enough insulin, and Type 2, which was previously referred to as “adult onset diabetes” and is identified by cells within the body failing to respond to insulin.
This type is primarily caused by excessive weight and poor exercise habits.
This means that in many cases Type 2 diabetes can be prevented altogether by following a few easy steps:
Exercise regularly. Many people assume that you need to live at the gym in order to be fit, but that’s not the case. Walking regularly, jogging, swimming, taking a dance class, and other low-impact options are also great ways to stay active and healthy.
Eat well. It’s easy to lean on processed and pre-packaged foods, but learning to cook healthy meals which involve lots of fruits and vegetables is an easy way to keep your weight down and keep Type 2 diabetes at bay.
Manage your weight. This is a sensitive subject for many Americans, but it’s a known fact that being overweight dramatically increases your chances of developing Type 2 diabetes.

If you’ve already been diagnosed with diabetes, don’t give up hope. With a little bit of effort and careful monitoring you can live a long, happy, and healthy life.
Here are a few things to do to:
- Floss daily to prevent gum disease.
- Drink lots of water to stay hydrated and curb cravings.
- Check your feet regularly for signs of poor blood circulation.
